One little-known side effect of  entering perimenopause? It may make your ADHD symptoms harder to manage.

For many women with ADHD, entering perimenopause can cause a worsening of their ADHD and many others that do not realise they are neurodivergent until hormone changes at perimenopause bring symptoms to the fore that they may have struggled with for years. 

During perimenopause and menopause, the body makes less oestrogen than it used to. As the levels of these hormone levels drop, it can lead to worsening ADHD symptoms. In some cases, this can mean a new approach is needed.

Dopamine and serotonin, two brain chemicals that are known to play a role in ADHD, are often affected. This can lead to worsening of ADHD symptoms. A 2021 study found that decreasing levels of oestrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can cause ADHD symptoms to become more severe.

This report analyses the gene variants that impact serotonin (contentment) and melatonin (sleep), dopamine (motivation), noradrenaline and adrenaline (fight or flight); glutamate (the major excitatory neurotransmitter); GABA (the major inhibitory neurotransmitter) which is critical for relaxation; and endoCannabinoids (AEA/ anandamide) which regulate other neurotransmitters. 
• 60 minute virtual appointment - with Tanya to explain your results & answer any questions you may have. This will be booked in once Lifecode Gx has received your sample, allowing for a 4 week turnaround time for results to be processed.
• Highlights of findings written summary report from Tanya with nutritional & lifestyle interventions pertinent to your results. 

Finer details:

• A sample of cheek cells is collected using the DNA test kit that is dispatched once purchased from which DNA is extracted and analyzed. It takes just 1 minute to collect the sample, place the swab in the test tube with the stabilizing tablet, complete and sign the consent form and place everything in the return packaging provided.
• Once Lifecode Gx has received your sample, we will email you to book in your virtual appointment with Tanya, allowing for a 4 week turnaround time for results to be processed. This 60-minute telephone or Zoom call will further explain your results, recommend nutrition and lifestyle interventions and answer any questions you may have.
• Your Highlights of Findings summary is emailed to you within 5 working days following your appointment together with a recording of your session within 5 working days following your virtual appointment.
